Collecting Money for Relay

Here's the plan. We're meeting at Tommy's house at 5:30 for dinner and will be going to Del Webb from there. I will have envelopes and sheets for everybody. Everyone will go out in pairs and take a different street. No groups of three unless we have an odd number. The more groups we have the more houses we can hit, thus smaller groups = more groups. If you do not have the permission form you WILL NOT be going to Del Webb (we don't care if you're 18+ you still need a permission form. It covers our hides.), although you're more than welcome to stay for dinner. If you need another copy of the form e-mail me (darkmists08@Yahoo.com) and I'll send it to you. Wear walking shoes and bring a coat/sweatshirt. See you all tonight.

About Stephanie

As most of you probably know Stephanie, one of our community members, has spent the last 10 months with Americorps. She's been sending us updates about what she's been up to when she has computer access. Unfortunately we didn't have this blog until recently so I couldn't pass them along. Following is her latest update. She'll be coming home in August.

Update from Stephanie

Hi!

So my team has been in New Orleans for three weeks now. Its been really nice (and hot!) here. Our sponsor has been really great, he's very relaxed and easy going. We've been installing compact florescent lamps all around the New Orleans in homes and businesses. Sometimes we take bikes and back packs, but we drive to the far places (which is most of them). Green Light (the organization we're working with) has the mission of replacing incondescent lightbulbs with CFLs throughout the whole city. The service and bulbs are completely free which is really neat. Its for everybody too - no qualifications except to have an address. We were able to see all sorts of places - areas that have made a lot of progress since Katrina and a lot that still need a lot of work. Our sponsor always encourages us to talk to the homeowners and families and hear their stories. For the people who opened up, it was really cool.

The next three weeks were supposed to be at a volunteer camp in Ocean Springs Mississippi working with other volunteers restoring homes damaged by hurricanes. However the camp recently had a break out of body lice and our project was cancelled :( - it was a big bummer, but this means we'll be staring our very last project early.

For the next 9 weeks my team will be at a camp in Lake Charles Louisiana. We will be camp counselors for kids between kindergarten and high school. At the camp there will be swimming, canoeing, kiaking, archery, and lots of nature-y stuff. Its going to be a blast and exhausting! My team (there are 10 of us) will be the only counselors at the camp. We will be planning all of the activities and games as well as making sure they go to bed at night. There's also one night a week we will go on a "camp out" and sleep under the stars. I'm glad our other project was camping cuz now I know more of what I'm doing :) I think it will be a lot of fun, though I'm a little nervous about finding creative, engaging things to do all day.Its crazy to think about, but after this project our program will be done. We'll drive back to campus in Sacramento for the last time, finish up a few paperwork type things, and head our separate ways. I want to try to make the most of the rest of this experience :) Of course soon I'll be able to talk to all of you face to face again so that is something to look forward to :)Hope all is well!

Sandwiches for Vineyard

The homeless breakfast hosted by Vineyard Fellowship Church in Elgin is transitioning from hot breakfast to sandwiches this week. Last year we tried to make sandwiches once a month, more if we could. Stephanie ran this last year, and it's something that I think we should continue with. However, I can't pay for supplies out of my own pocket like she did for a lot of it. If this is something we're all still interested in doing everyone's going to have to pitch in.

What we need (typically):

5-6 loaves of bread (we almost always ran out of this. If we have extra you can take it home).

5-6 packages of lunch meat

4-5 pacakages of cheese singles (we always seem to run out of these too).

Tomatoes

Lettuce

Ziploc bags

Jewel/generic brand bread/meat/cheese/bags are less expensive.

Here's the plan for this Wed. 5/6. Those of you who are so inclined will be meeting at my house at 5:30 and going door to door collecting money for Relay. We'll go in pairs (depending on how many people show) and every one will take a different street. We'll go to Tommy's afterwards (6:00). Any questions give me a call. See you all Wed.
